Hi, this is Grim!

Although it’s still early days, the Freestyle Skateboarding social space at The Cab has already been an incredible success. From the very beginning, we’ve hit the ground running and have been delighted by the response from the community.

One of the biggest assets has been the new outdoor seating area. Time and again, people have been drawn in by the sound of laughter, conversation and the welcoming atmosphere. Even on quieter, rainy days, we’ve found ourselves having meaningful conversations with members of the local community. One memorable chat was with an older gentleman who stopped by, curious about what the space was being used for and genuinely interested in what we were trying to achieve.

While we’ve only soft-launched the project so far, it’s already becoming much more than just a skateboarding space. It’s developing into a social hub for skaters and those involved in Newport’s alternative scene. We’ve welcomed people from all walks of life, creating opportunities for connection, friendship and shared interests.

The turnout has exceeded all expectations. On one particularly busy day, we estimate that between 80 and 100 people came through the space. Seeing so many different people come together has been fantastic and really demonstrates the demand for safe, inclusive spaces where people can simply hang out, chat and be themselves.

For me personally, it’s been incredibly rewarding. Walking away from each session, I genuinely feel that we’re doing something positive for the community, and I can’t wait to see how the project continues to grow over the coming months.
