About Us

Real people. Real issues. Real voices.

Who We Are

Reality Theatre CIC is a non-profit community arts and music organisation based in the heart of Newport, South Wales, rooted in one of the most deprived areas of the city. The organisation was founded in 2016 and driven by a belief in the transformative power of creativity.

We work across theatre, film, and music to empower individuals, challenge inequality, and amplify the voices of those often excluded from the creative sector. As a working-class, issue-driven organisation, our projects reflect the real lives, struggles, and strengths of the communities we serve.

Our city centre venue, The Cab, is a thriving hub for workshops, rehearsals, social events, and community performances. We also deliver outreach sessions throughout Newport and the surrounding areas, engaging older people in independent living settings, as well as young people and adults with additional learning needs.

In addition to our community arts work, we proudly run a grassroots music venue, hosting punk, hardcore and alternative gigs. From emerging local acts to touring international bands, The Cab supports DIY culture and provides an inclusive space for bold, live music.

Mission

Reality Theatre CIC exists to empower marginalised communities through theatre, film, and music. We create inclusive, accessible opportunities for people of all backgrounds but specifically working-class people, particularly older people and individuals with additional learning needs – to express themselves, build confidence, and challenge social inequality through the arts. Our mission is to break down barriers, nurture talent, and amplify real voices through authentic, issue-driven creative work.

Vision

We envision a world where everyone – regardless of background, ability or circumstance – has equal access to creativity, expression and cultural participation. Through grassroots theatre and music, we aim to build a more inclusive, connected society where unheard voices have a platform and creativity is a tool for empowerment, understanding, and social change.

Our Funders Make Our Work Possible

Reality Theatre’s community arts programme is only possible thanks to the generous support of our funders. Their investment enables us to deliver free and low-cost creative opportunities for people across Newport — from drama, movement and performance workshops for older adults, to inclusive arts sessions for young people and adults with additional learning needs, to grassroots music, film and community events at The Cab.

Their continued belief in our mission allows us to remove financial and social barriers, keep our venue open and accessible, employ skilled facilitators and artists, and create a safe, welcoming space where people can connect, create and thrive.

We are deeply grateful to every funder who has chosen to support our work. Their commitment empowers us to reach hundreds of people each week, nurture new talent, celebrate local stories, and strengthen our city’s creative community.
